After teaching in a one-room schoolhouse in Brazil from 1989 to 1997, Barbara arrived in Argentina in 1999 to work as an itinerant teacher to children of missionaries (MKs) and their families serving in Northern Argentina. Her “classrooms” cover three provinces as she helps students with their studies in English. In a nutshell, she spends one week in each area where she has students and then moves to another area for the next week. She has students that home-school and follow a United States curriculum and school calendar year, as well as students that are enrolled in the national schools and supplement their Argentine studies with academic coursework in English.
She won't tell this to everyone, but she considers herself to be a Valley girl—Yakima Valley, that is. She moved to Sunnyside when she was nine-months old and graduated from SHS in 1976. Her father was an elementary school teacher in Granger for almost thirty years and her mother substitute-taught while raising her three brothers and herself. Chalk dust must settle in the family veins as she has made a similar choice for how she invests her life.
Barbara cannot remember a time when she did not want to be a teacher. In fact, when she was considering colleges and programs, she purposefully looked at other career choices since she had never seriously considered doing anything else. That search only confirmed her desire to teach. Barbara believes that desire is a direct result of Psalms 37:4 and 5 which states, “Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, and He will do it.” Barbara says, "It is a humbling experience to know that God chooses to use each one of us for His Kingdom purposes. It is also a humbling experience to know that brothers and sisters in the Lord such as yourselves choose to take an interest and participate in my life and ministry here in Argentina."
